Computing with Computational Thinking

Primary Computational Thinking 'Workshop' - Teacher Slides

This was one of many staff workshops which I created when I started the transition to computational thinking with the Primary curriculum.

At my current school I was the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Computing Coordinator. When I first took the role I changed the way in which we taught computing to Primary children. I introduced computational thinking and how this will benefit children we teach and how this will ultimately create critical thinkers who can use their creativity to create and code. Also, by not allowing children to simply sit at a computer each computer lesson, children will then develop their life skills as well.

For example, you don't need to be at a computer desk to learn the concepts of computational thinking. In the images you will see children who had to solve a BIG problem and break it down into smaller steps to try to reach the other side of the basketball court.

George's Marvellous Medicine Audio Book

George's Marvellous Medicine

During the pandemic I promoted reading by reading aloud, recoding and editing the story via a video software program to provide a chapter of George's Marvellous Medicine written by Roald Dahl, each day for the children in my class.

Thematic with integrated PBL, SDG and CBC

An example of how PBL can help pique children's interest in a new unit of study.

With the recent pandemic. It was quite challenging to motivate children to perform at their best. So, I made this video to link with our 'Supersonic' sound unit for Year 4.

At my current school, we ultilise Life Values. These are values in which we want to help other children to develop through the course of their Primary eduction.

The Thematic curriculum which I have developed over the last few years aims to ultilise the UK National Curriculum skills and knowledge for Science, History and Humanities. Whilst also aiming to including concepts and build children's conceptual understanding. Whilst also including opportunities per unit to include Project Based Learning for children to develop their life skills. I aim to include sustainable development goals to provide real world examples and BIG problems from children to think about and imagine different solutions. Finally, to include thinking tools to allow children to develop their critical thinking skills.

It does seem ambitious to comfortably cover all thematic skills and include all of the other elements. However, I find this the best way to plan Thematic. If you would like to view more units which I have personally created. Please go to the curriculum page.

FOBISIA Creative Coding Competition

Each year children from year 5 and 6 are chosen (based on their ability and interest in creative coding) to represent Bangkok Prep in the FOBISIA Creative Coding Competition. This is an unique project, children can choose to work individually or interdependently. They then have to work without any adult help or demonstration in order to complete a specification set by FOBISIA to create a program and then children have to evidence how they created their program.

The slides to the left side are all presentations created by children I worked with. This is a great competition, promoting a range of life skills as well as academic skills and knowledge.
